Ackee

The image “http://www.jnht.com/IMAGES/natfruit.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

The Jamaican Ackee is the National fruit of Jamaica. Originally it was brought from Slave ships from West Africa. When an ackee is ripe, it turns red and splits open, exposing the seeds inside and the fleshy, delicately flavoured aril - the edible segment. The aril has an appearance and texture of rather like scrambled egg. It's often eaten with cod fish, sautéed over a hot stove with butter, onion and sweet peppers. If you take precautions when selecting and cooking your fruit it can make a safe and tasty dish.

This can become however a lethal weapon if not cooked or picked properly. An ackee which is not fully ripe or is past it's best picking time on the tree can be extremely poisonous. Eating an ackee at the wrong stage of development can cause sickness or even death.

Recently several deaths have led to a ban on exporting Ackee from Jamaica. I want to feel that the people just did not know how to cook it properly or it was picked too soon. Whatever the reason, living overseas and not having access to Ackee is something I miss. What is Saltfish without deh Ackee mon?....you tell me.

Jamaican National Anthem

The image “http://3mpub.com/wright/images/jamaican%20flag.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Eternal Father, Bless our Land,
Guide us with thy mighty hand,
Keep us free from evil powers,
Be our light through countless hours,
To our leaders, great defender,
Grant true wisdom from above,
Justice, truth be ours forever,
Jamaica, land we love,
Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica, land we love

Teach us true respect for all,
Stir response to duty's call,
Strengthen us the weak to cherish,
Give us vision lest we perish,
Knowledge send us Heavenly Father,
Grant true wisdom from above,
Justice, truth be ours forever,
Jamaica, land we love,
Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica, land we love

Above is the Jamaica National Anthem. This has been a great source of pride for many Jamaicans both locally and abroad. The sad part is that with the violence and unrest in the country, the vision that the anthem presents seems to be lost.

Jamaica is a wonderful country, full of vibrant, peaceful people. However, as in any country that faces constant poverty, greed and corruption can take its toll.
I want to come back to the country that represnts my national anthem. It is the land I love.

Jamaican Cartoon

I found this photo at http://www.go-jamaica.com/cartoon/

It is a shame that folks don't realize that they are hurting the country's image. Both parties need to grow up! Here we have two factions that for years are fighting over control. Control of what? poverty? I mean here we have millions of tourist a year come to Jamaica and still we are at this high poverty level. The "haves" versus the "havenots." Some of the folks abroad that are thinking of leaving and returning back to yard are scared. If they don't tief all your things at the airport then you have to worry about gunman shooting you up on the way to your home.

I don't see what EITHER party is doing for the island. All about control and laying blame. I am proud to be a Jamaican, but wheter I would return at this time is questionable.
