Crack Down on Business in Kingston

Photobucket

Last week many businesses were closed down due to raids down by the tax officials and Kingston's Mayor Desmond Mckenzie. Many did not possess work permits, trade license, tax documents or any type of legal status to even be in Jamaica.

Many of the offenders were of Phillipino descent. Not only were there tax violations, but the major complaint was about abuse of the labor laws. Several employees complained about doing9 hour days and sometimes a 20minute break or no break at all. Many businesses were also being closed for safety violations (by the Public Health Department).
