Jamaica and Autism

Autism Pictures, Images and Photos

In Jamaica, the word "Autism" is just now becoming a familar word. Years ago, having a child that was "different" can warrant just titles as, "baffon" or " Lagga Head." It was not until this year (April 2008) did children with the Autism Spectrum Disorder begin to get the help they needed.

The organization was founded by Maia Chung Smith. Autism is defined as a disorder of the brain, it affects development and can affec a person's ability to communicate and relate to others. Signs of Autism generally appear at the age of 18 months.

In Jamaica people with Autism are generally viewed as "the mad person." Since many people who have had to care for these children generally do not send them to school, they sometimes do not get the help that is needed.

Ms Smith has been instrumental in changing the situation for Jamaicas who find themselves caring for these kids, especially focusing on the rural parishes.

Her foundation strives to get government funding to train teachers and those in the teaching profession to better handle these children.

I shudder to think of all the mis-diagnoses that have been made for these children, and how some have given up on them as hopeless, because of widespread ignorance. Thank goodness for Maia Chung and other people and agencies who are spreading the light on this issue.
