Rest in Peace, "Mama Africa"
Makeba (Mama Africa) died after taking part in a concert for Roberto Saviano in Italy Monday. Makeba’s remains were flown out of Italy late yesterday, and the flight carrying the legendary singer landed at the OR Tambo Cargo Airport at 8am this morning. More than a hundred airport employees crowded outside the cargo port in silence, since early morning, as they patiently waited to see the simple brown coffin through the windows of a hearse as it left.
Miriam Makeba sings her most famous song Pata Pata during a performance in the VARA TV-studios in Holland, 1979. Joining her on stage towards the end of the song is her granddaughter Zenzi. Zenzi's mother (the late Bongi Makeba) is one of the backing vocalists (in the blue dress).
