Serena Williams Fined

Serena Williams was fined $10,000 on Sunday for her menacing tirade against a line judge at the conclusion of her semifinals loss at the United States Open on Saturday, and may face more penalties.

Williams, who has already earned $455,000 for singles and doubles at this tournament, was fined $10,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct and $500 for racket abuse, which occurred earlier in the match, by the tournament referee, Brian Earley.

I remember when John McEnroe use to throw tantrums, and it seemed like there was not that much hoopla about it. Sometimes we get angry and allow our temper to get away from us. I feel that is what happened to Serena.

Serena Williams outlasted Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 6-4, 7-5 for her third US Open championship and ninth Grand Slam title on Sunday.

It had been even longer since her last Open championship - six years. And though it was her ninth Grand Slam title, it was just her second since capturing the Australian Open in early 2005.

Williams beat Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 7-5 in the final and didn't drop a set the entire tournament. She figures many doubted that she'd ever climb back on top of the tennis world as her ranking plummeted all the way to No. 139.

"Oh, yeah," she said Monday. "I think a lot of people, probably everyone thought (that). I always felt that I can be No. 1 if I really put in the effort."

Serena Williams won her first title in 11 months, defeating Patty Schnyder 7-5, 6-3 Sunday in the Bangalore Open final in India. ( I had predicted Serena would win-yeah)

Serena was very dominate throughout the finals ,with some powerful serves and groundstrokes. Schnyder committed several unforced errors in trying to hit deep and keep Williams at the baseline.

"It's good to be a champ here, it always feels good to win," said Williams, who won her 29th career title and first since last April at Miami. "I did not want to make too many errors. That was my game plan, but I did not stick to it." When you're playing a champion like Serena, you've got to be at your best," said the 12th-ranked Schnyder, whose career record in finals dropped to 10-13.
