Dancehall music- Too Explicit??

http://www.mixtapetorrent.com/system/files/dancehallonsmashvol3.jpg

In recognition of the growing problem with Aids in Jamaica I am gearing this post about the influence of Sexual Lyrics in Dancehall and whether or not it should be a responsibility of the artist or artists to monitor themselves.

The fact is most Reggae Artist have very young listeners, (especially in Jamaica). Music is the spirit of the Jamaican Soul. It was through music that many of the slaves were able to endure working in the cane fields (similar to the Western experience of the blacks in the Cotton Fields).

One artist I that was always bringing some positive vibes to us was Bob Marley. That is not to say Bob didn't have his slackness tunes as well. He made commercial success though by marketing the positive aspects of the reggae sounds

I find in Jamaica, where the Aids epidemic is so very high that it IS the the artist responsibility to make sure they monitor the contents of their lyrics. Sometimes people have a tendancy to act on the words of the entertainers, so they should know the message they are sending. Two songs come to my mind instantly. (Tek Buddy Gyal and Elephant Man's "Bring Yuh P---- ) Mavado has a recent hit with "Force It Up"

When I see a little 3 year old whining up herself and doing the "dutty whine dance," I don't think it is cute at all. Can music breed promiscuity. I believe it can. Music sets the mood and tune for many things we feel emotionally in life. I never saw anyone making love to " Theme from 007 by James Bond." I can however see people doing it like Luther Vandross or Marvin Gaye."

Several Artist such as Ce'Cile will be performing tomorrow in Africa Jamaican Observer, that she felt it was her duty as an artist to help raise awareness.

I fear those as long as Sex is sells records, that in Jamaica it will always be a #1 best seller for all artist that feel they have to go that route.

My hobby is making videos. My friends say with all you do throughout the day, how do you find the time to make videos. Well, for things you love you make time.

So here is my latest video, uploaded to Google. It shows pictures of reflections of life behind prison bars. I love the words of Jah Cure so I used his song, "Prison Walls" to add the flavor to the video

Port Royal History

PORT ROYAL'S EARLY DAYS

In December 1654, Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of England, sent an invasion force under the commands of Admiral Penn and General Venables to capture Hispaniola. The Spanish were forewarned of the attack and soundly defeated the English forces attempting to capture the city of Santo Domingo. Failing miserably and fearing to return to England empty handed, Penn and Venables sailed south to Jamaica, and in May 1655, captured the poorly defended island with relatively little resistance. In short, Jamaica became a consolation prize to appease Cromwell.

Construction of Passage Fort, also known as Fort Cromwell, began in a matter of weeks following the conquest. Situated at the tip of the sand spit separating Kingston Harbor from the Caribbean, the fort could control all access to the harbor through the narrow entrance. A small community, known as The Point or Point Cagway, consisting of mariners, merchants, craftsmen, and prostitutes, built up around the fort (Pawson and Buisseret 1975:7). After the restoration of Charles II and the monarchy in England in 1660, The Point was renamed Port Royal, and the fort, was renamed Fort Charles (Taylor 1965:131; Pawson and Buisseret 1975:9).

Although Port Royal was designed to serve as a defensive fortification, guarding the entrance to the harbor, it assumed much greater importance. As a result of its location within a well-protected harbor, its flat topography, and deep water close to shore, large ships could easily be serviced, loaded, and unloaded. Ships' captains, merchants, and craftsmen established themselves in Port Royal to take advantage of of the trading and outfitting opportunities. As Jamaica's economy grew and changed between 1655 and 1692, Port Royal grew faster than any town founded by the English in the New World, and it became the most economically important English port in the Americas.

Port Royal was the most successful entry point in the 17th-century English New World. Its social milieu was quite different than either that of New England, with its religiously ordered towns, or of the tobacco-driven economy of Maryland and Virginia. Port Royal had a tolerant, laissez-faire attitude that allowed for a diversity of religious expression and lifestyles. There is early mention of merchants, who were Quakers, 'Papists,' Puritans, Presbyterians, Jews, or, of course, Anglicans, practicing their religion openly alongside the free-willing sailors and pirates who frequented the port.

ON JUNE 7, 1692, after winding up his morning prayer service, Dr. Emmanuel Heath, the Anglican rector in Port Royal, left St. Paul's Church and walked to a nearby tavern. There he met his friend John White, who was president of the island's Council, and the two men got to chatting. Soon goblets of wormwood wine were brought out and White lit his customary pipe of tobacco. Before it was outed and the wine drunk, the floor suddenly began to rumble and shake. "Lord, Sir," the Rev. Heath asked his friend, "what's this?" (Gragg, 2000).
Following the earthquake, Port Royal underwent a dramatic revival only to fall again when it was ravaged by fire in 1703. A total of 16 hurricanes between 1712 and 1951 have consistently slashed Jamaica, as have an additional six earthquakes between 1770 and 1956 (Cox 1984:Appendix B). Following a severe storm, a hurricane, and two earthquakes in 1722, Port Royal as it once was disappeared for the last time.

PORT ROYAL TODAY

As one walks along the narrow streets of the poor fishing village of Port Royal today, it is hard to imagine that it once was the largest and most economically important English settlement in the Americas. It is now an isolated place at the end of a long sand spit. It has a population of ca. 1800 people, who view themselves as 'Port Royalists,' rather than as simply Jamaican.
Considerable work has been conducted on the section of Port Royal that remains submerged below the water of Kingston Harbor (see Link 1960; Marx 1973; Hamilton 1984, 1985, 1986, 1988). For various reasons, these data have not been used by archaeologists working on contemporaneous 17th-century English colonial sites in North America. Much can be learned from Port Royal, for the underwater excavations have resulted in remarkable parallels and even more interesting contrasts with contemporaneous English colonists in North America.

Hedonism Resorts

The most popular resorts on the island of Jamaica are the "Hedonism Resorts." Hedonist feel that people should be equal, and that the way to achieve that is through allowing much more personal freedom. In this case the freedom is usually of a sexual nature.

The Hotels can be found on the beautiful North Coast of Jamaica. They are said to be the reputed seat of hard-drinking, anything-goes, sex-drugs-and-reggae wickedness. Hedonism I and now III or Hedo, as its regulars call it, has the most loyal following of any resort on the island. They can draw a repeat visitor rate of 40% or more compared with the other island resorts.

The Pool Area at Hedonism III

Swim Up Bar adds to Pool Fun

As uninhibited as you dare!

Well, I won't be visiting any HEDO resorts anytime soon. First off I am not a prude but going a hotel just to be nekkid with tourist is not my idea of fun. Having sex non-stop and smoking weed is not my idea of fun. I am not knocking those who like that lifestyle but for me Jamaica is much more then the hedo resorts show. It is more then sand and beach. It is beautiful island, with some wonderful people and if you are stuck in a hotel, with a lot of debauchery going on, then you might miss out on see that aspect of the island.

Clamp Down on the Foreign Nationals

Boy, it seem like Jamaica a clamp down on the Foreign people working in Jamaica without the proper paperwork. The Jamaican Observer reports today that their is a mad rush on applications and other paperwork needed to fall into compliance for proper work permits.

It is also stated that many are not bothering to fill out the time consuming forms and are simply just leaving the island. Minister of Labour, Pearnel Charles on Friday, however, refused to comment on the alleged exodus, saying only that he had heard that some airlines were "unable to handle the traffic".

In the meantime, Cabinet has agreed to increase the current penalty for breaches of the Foreign Nationals and Commonwealth Citizens Employment Act from $200 or six months imprisonment to $500,000 or six months in jail.

I wonder what impact this will have on Jamaica. Many of the Foreign Nationals working in Jamaica put a lot of money in the banking system as well as providing jobs for the locals.

Ghetto Story-Baby Cham and Alicia Keys

Big Up to Baby Cham and Alicia Keys. I love this song. Hip Hop and Reggae at its best. I wonder if she has any West Indian roots.

Shaggy-Intoxication

http://nofi.files.wordpress.com/2006/10/shaggy.jpg

Shaggy has made it to the top with his hit "Intoxication." Intoxication is Shaggy's eighth studio album. His first release was Pure Pleasure in 1993. Original Doberman for Greensleeves was released in 1994. A year later Virgin released the double platinum-selling Boombastic, while Midnite Lover, his final opus for Virgin, saw the light of day in 1997

I have loved Shaggy from his Mr Boombastic days. He kinda took over the popularity helm from Shabba Ranks.

Is Regge still a "Jamaican Thing?"

http://www.freewebs.com/2ralph/reggae%20ramp%20halspark.JPG

As many people might remember , Matisyahu, A Jewish man from Brooklyn, has his album, Youth" nominated for the Grammy Awards (held this year). He was nominated alongside such greats as Buju Banton, Ziggy Marley, Sly and Robbie (among others).

So what is happening to Reggae Music? Robert "Nester" Marley created this amazing genre of music. With the deep bass sounds and distinctive "Skank" beats it has taken the world by storm.
It has been incorporated in almost every known musical sound. Most recently linked with the pouplar "Reggaeton" beat.

Charles Campbell, a Jamaican Observer writer points out these facts, "In essence though, this is the still largely underexploited potential which Jamaica has to increase our annual earnings from tourism and entertainment/music. Ironically, the biggest obstacle to doing so is the Jamaican status quo. "

Local Jamaican artist generally have to rely on some of the big multi-national companies to make them successful. They do depend on them for marketing and promoting their music internationally. We have many artist relocate, because it is easier to break into the business abroad then in Jamaica.

So has Jamaica lost its ownership or rights to saying it is a "Jamaican based Product?"

Jamaican Nettball-Semi Finals

The image “http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41486000/jpg/_41486400_netball300.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
First off let me say...YEAH!! Okay I got that out. I use to play Netball so I know the feeling of accomplishment to get to that level. Even without the presence of their inspiring captain Elaine Davis, still troubled by an ankle injury, Jamaica stepped up to the mark in style. They just did and outstanding job.
Big Up to Romelda Aiken who has scored the most goals of any player in the Championship. She has scored 135 goals from a total of 147 attempts. Hopefully they will do will continue on their winning streak.

Jamaican Revivalism

http://www.jamaica-junky.com/jamaica-junky/foto-ocho-rios/watt-town.jpg
Watt Town Revival Meeting

Revivalism is divided into two groups, Zion and Pocomania. Pocomania is more African in form while Zion is more Christian oriented. These two groups have very clear differences, particularly with their functionaries and the role that they play. In Pocomania for example, the leader is always a man knows as the Shepherd while in Zion, the leader can be either a man or a woman. The Man is referred to as “Captain” while the woman is called the “Mother/Madda”. There is also a difference in their music and the form of spiritual possession.
1861, which saw the incorporation of much more African retention in the movement.

In revivalism those possessed with the spirits are generally linked with a personal spirit. In most case, if not all, it is the spirit who selects the individual and becomes personally attached as a personal guardian and adviser to the possessed. The revivalist spiritual world is categorized into three realms:
• Heavenly spirits
• Earth - bound spirits
• Ground spirits

Revival Churches can be found all over Jamaica, particularly in the deep rural areas and in the inner-city sections of the corporate area. On specific dates, towards the end of each quarter within the year, revivalists may be seen journeying to Watt Town, St. Ann. This is one of the most popular revival meeting places. At Watt Town, all aspects of the religion are usually on display: there is the church service, which entails bible reading, singing of hymns and choruses, trumping and the cymbals, dancing, spiritual possessions, healing and sometimes warning.
