Prince Buster

The music of Prince Bustamante has a unique unmistakable style. Cecil Bustamante Campbell, was born 28 May 1938. We know him better as Prince Buster. He is also known as Muhammad Yusef Ali. Prince Buster originally from Kingston, Jamaica is regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of ska and rocksteady music. The records he made on the Blue Beat label in the 1960s inspired many reggae and ska artists.

Prince Buster now lives in Miami, Florida. He has performed at a few shows over the past several years, including the 2002 Legends Of Ska festival in Toronto, in Dedham, Massachusetts in 2002, in the 2006 Boss Sounds Reggae Festival in Newcastle upon Tyne and 2007's Rhythm Festival. During the last day of the 2008 Notting Hill Carnival, Prince Buster made an appearance on the Gaz's Rockin' Blues stage, alongside The Trojans.

The Melodians

I remember in the late sixties being introduced to the sounds of The Melodians. Their rich sound made you want to move your feet. The voices always in perfect harmony.
The melodians band formed in the Greenwich Town area of Kingston, Jamaica in 1965, by Tony Brevett (brother of The Skatalites bassist, Lloyd Brevett), Brent Dowe and Trevor McNaughton. Renford Cogle assisted with writing and arranging material.


From 1967 to 1968 they had a number of hits on Duke Reid's Treasure Isle label, including "You Have Caught Me", "Expo 67", "I'll Get Along Without You", and "You Don't Need Me." After recording "Swing and Dine" for record producer Sonia Pottinger, they recorded their biggest hit, "Rivers of Babylon" for Leslie Kong. This song became an anthem of the Rastafarian movement, and was featured on the soundtrack for the movie, The Harder They Come.[1] After Kong's death in 1971, they recorded for Lee Perry and Byron Lee's Dynamic Studios. In 1973, Brent Dowe left the group for a solo career. The group reformed briefly a few years later, and again in the early 1980's.


The had their revival in the 1990's. In 1992 they recorded "Song of Love", which was issued on the Tappa Zukie label. Throughout the later 1990s they continued touring internationally, including appearing at the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival in California in 2002. In November 2005 The Melodians embarked on a West Coast tour.


On the evening of 28 January 2006, after a rehearsal in preparation for a performance to take place the following weekend at the Jamaican Prime Minister’s residence, Brent Dowe suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 59. The remaining original members Tony Brevett and Trevor McNaughton continued touring in Europe and the U.S. backed by the Yellow Wall Dub Squad.

Coalition to Preserve Reggae - Sonia Pottinger

The Jamaica Observer reported that  Coalition to Preserve Reggae Music (CPR) are saddened to learn of the passing of Sonia Pottinger and have offered their condolences to her family and friends.

Many people know my Aunt Sonia Pottinger as accomplished reggae producer.  She was the best in the business from the early 1960's to the mid 80's when she retired. She was however much more than that. She had the kindest heart and the most spiritual person I know.

Mrs. P, was like a mother to me. She helped me through many hard times in my life. I know how the public knew her, but her kids and family new her when she wasn't running to manage Tip Top Records or to the studio to make sure everything was going right.

Sonia Pottinger, married to music producer Lyndon Pottinger, she opened her Tip Top Records Shop in 1965 and started to record musicians in 1966. The first single she issued was "Every Night" by Joe White & Chuck.[1] Other artists recorded during this period include Roland Alphonso. Throughout the rock steady and early reggae eras, she became very prolific with hits by The Ethiopians ("The Whip"), Delano Stewart, The Melodians ("Swing And Dine"), Ken Boothe, Alton Ellis and Toots & the Maytals, released on her Gay Feet, Tip Top, Rainbow, and High Note labels.[1] In the early 1970s her work was less prolific, but in 1974 she bought the Treasure Isle label from long time friend Duke Reid shortly before his death.

In the 1970s, she produced albums by Bob Andy, Marcia Griffiths, Culture, U Roy and Big Youth. Her most well known production is Culture's Harder Than The Rest album, released in 1978.

In the dancehall era show produced Archie & Lynn's "Rat in the Centre". She retired from the music business in 1985.[1]

World Reggae Dance Festival

Everyone knows Jamaicans can "Whine Mon." We have rhythmn, although I have seem some folks that need to work on that. Well, if you want to see "real dance moves," the World Reggae Dance Championship, put on by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission has it all.

More than $1 million in cash and prizes are up for grabs at the national finals, which will be staged on August 1 at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Center in Kingston.

Vbytz Kartel is a Free Man

Well, I know many people are thinking like I am that money is seriously changing hands in this case. A quote from the Jamaican Star has his lawyer saying,

"Your Honour, I know the name Vybz Kartel might send off a negative vibes. However, I am representing Adidjah Palmer who is a totally different person from the entertainer persona. And it is in this light that we want to say we are sorry to the music fraternity and Jamaica at large for what happened at Sting," he said.

As many reading may recall Vbyz was accuses of using indecent language at the Sting show last year.

This is gonna to make it hard for the Ministers who want to censor the language used in many of the dancehall tunes.

Following in The Footsteps of Willie Lindo

The great Beres Hammond insisted that Willie Lindo record Kashief,( his young son) at the age of four. Kashief Lindo's first album, entitled Trouble Free, swept the charts in the United States, Europe and Japan. It features his remake of a Jimmy Cliff classic, Many Rivers to Cross, a rendition that brought rave reviews. He subsequently released other albums, including Push For Your Goal, Soul and Inspiration, What Kind of World, Kashief Sings Christmas, his first all original album We Need Love and his latest, Keep On Keepin On.

He has made his dad WILLIE LINDO very proud. Big Up to Kashief. Not only is he a great looker but a wonderful singer as well.

All White Funeral-Carlton Grant Jr

As many of you know Spragga Benz's son Carlton was laid to to rest on September 13th. The sad thing it was bitter sweet for me. That was my birthday but also the funeral reminded me of all the craziness that is happening in this world. Some say we are in the last days. I believe them.

For those who don't remember the incident surrounding Carlton's death occurred on Church Street in Kingston when the police were on an alleged patrol. It was reported that Grant and a friend was riding a bicycle when ordered by the police to stop, which they did and one of them pulled a gun and fired at the police. The fire was returned and the men ran, the area was searched and Grant's body was found suffering from several gunshot wounds.

Carlton Grant Jr. successfully sat his CXCs earning 6 subjects. He will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace Carlton.



My girlfriend went to the funeral and called it a "Celebration of Life." She stated the theme was "angels" that was why they wore white.She said the singing was so beautiful by the Camperdown High School Singers.

Weeping openly and even uncontrollably at times, family and friends filed into Our Lady Of Angels Church on Molynes Road at 10:00am. The church quickly filled up with many representatives from the Jamaican and global music fraternities in attendance, including: Nadine Sutherland, Clyde McKenzie, Assassin, Carlene Smith, TOK, Richie Stephens, Copper Cat and Foxy Brown.

South Park Rasta-History of Reggae Music

I love some of the current dancehall, but there is nothing like old school reggae. I mean people know Bob Marley, but there was music before Bob. In Jamaica man use to rock back and forth to the beat, (it didn't involve rubbing up on anyone, like they do now).
