Jamaican History-Famous Scientists

I am trying to get back to one of the reasons I started my blog. It was to educate people about Jamaica. Jamaica is more then just a tourist experience. There is so much history here.

Famous Jamaican Scientists

1972: Prof. Louis Grant, chairman of the University Hospital Board and Professor of Microbiology, UWI, speaking at the official opening of the School of Physiotherapy.

By Dr. Rebecca Tortello
The saying "we likkle but we tallawah" can be applied to many aspects of Jamaican life, not the least of which is Jamaica's contribution to world science. This article, the first in a two-part series featuring Jamaican scientists, considers the work of Professor Louis Grant, microbiologist, one of those whose work had immense local and international impact.

PROF. LOUIS GRANT, M.D., C.H., M.P.H., DIP BACT., FAPHA, F.C. PATH, F.A.A.N. (1913-1993)
A microbiologist and pathologist, Prof. Louis Grant was affiliated with the University of the West Indies for 20 years where he achieved the highest academic honour, being named professor emeritus in microbiology. Young Louis Grant was surrounded by science from an early age born in Vere, Clarendon in 1913, his father worked in a chemical laboratory at the Appleton Estate. As a student, Grant showed promise and received the Vere Trust scholarship to attend Jamaica College. He went on to Edinburgh University in Scotland and later specialised in tropical microbiology at the London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Prof. Grant then returned to Jamaica serving his country as a medical doctor, microbiologist and pathologist.

TUBERCULOSIS

In the 1940s Dr. Grant dreamed of a Jamaica with less disease and he decided to focus on tuberculosis a disease then plaguing the island. He asked the World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNICEF for a grant to begin an inoculation campaign amongst Jamaican children. Joined by Dr. Ronald Lampart, Dr. Grant completed a mass vaccination that is credited with helping to break the cycle of infection and halt the spread of the dreaded disease.

Groundbreaking Research On Three Diseases
During the decade of the 1960s, Dr. Grant became a full professor of microbiology at the University of the West Indies, Mona. Three diseases came to his attention. Two affected the island's general population and one its horse population.

LEPTOSPIROSIS

In the early 1960s many Jamaicans began to fall ill with severe fevers. Some, who seemed otherwise healthy, soon died. Through intensive research Dr. Grant discovered that this disease was spread through contact with the urine of infected animals. Rats were immune to it and therefore major carriers of the virus. Dr. Grant deduced that rats tend to urinate after eating in kitchens and this way people would consume food on which rats might have already urinated. There is no cure for viruses, the most doctors can do is make the patient comfortable while the body fights off the infection. The leptospirosis virus, if not rejected by the body immediately on contact, would then enter the blood stream, multiply and possibly lead to death. Dr. Grant quickly spread the word, cautioning against rats entering kitchens and the danger of leaving food exposed. This public education campaign helped contain the spread of the disease, outbreaks of which have since been controlled.

EQUINE ENCEPHALITIS

In the mid-1960s, reports of a disease afflicting horses on the eastern side of the island began to surface. Prof. Grant instituted quarantine on the movement of horses, donkeys and mules from that region. After much laboratory investigation he discovered that the horses were suffering from a virus known as equine encephalitis, which could not be spread to humans but could cause great damage to Jamaica's horse population. He recommended further measures for containment, thereby preventing the spread of the virus and the ruination of Jamaica's billion-dollar horse industry. He also acquired a new title the horse saviour.

DENGUE FEVER

In the late 1960s Jamaicans began to suffer from a strange fever. Dr. Grant identified it as the dengue virus and concluded after much research that it was transmitted via the aedes aegypti mosquito the same mosquito that carries the deadly yellow fever virus. This led to another public education campaign and the beginning of a research effort on the study of arboviruses (viruses spread by blood-sucking insects) at UWI.

In the early 1970s Prof. Grant retired from the University of the West Indies and moved to Canada. From 1974 to 1977 he served as the Associate Medical Officer of Health for the Niagara Regional Health Unit. From 1977 to 1984, he acted as the Medical Officer of Health for the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit. Throughout the decade he spent in Canada, Dr. Grant became an active member of the Ontario Public Health Association (OPHA) and the Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA), a community activist and an advocate for social justice. He gained increasing recognition and was eventually able to attract large measures of funding to fulfil his lifelong dream of establishing a public health clinic for low income Jamaicans.

He returned to Jamaica, bringing many international scientists with him who served at reduced or no cost. His clinic, The Foundation for International Self-Help (FISH), opened in Papine in 1985. Prof. Grant died in Jamaica in 1993, leaving behind a wife and four children and ending a career that spanned 50 years in public service. He had authored over 90 scientific publications in microbiology and public health and received the Gleaner Special Award and the Pelican Award in 1985. Prof. Grant is remembered as the father of Jamaican microbiology. In 1996, an award in the form of a $1000CD scholarship and one-year membership in OPHA was established by the OPHA in his honor. The award supports the postgraduate education of an individual enrolled in a post-graduate program in community or public health.

Movado and Bounty Killa Banned in Guyana

>movado

RJR News reported that Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee told reporters that Bounty Killa, whose real name is Rodney Price and Mavado whose real name is David Brooks are seen as a Security Risk to the country.

Mavado was due to perform at a concert to celebrate the Linden Town this weekend.
What I can't understand is how you ban people and still promote their music on your radio stations? That seems to be hypocritical. So people can listen to the music, just not experience the music live.

Jamaica Upset United States in Penn Relay

Jamaica's Marvin Anderson, Michael Frater, Nesta Carter and Dwight Thomas finished in 39.04 seconds. Powell, the world-record holder in the 100, withdrew Friday, citing a chest muscle injury.
All, I have to say is Jamaicans nuh have to use steroids mon! We make it on own strength.

Jamaicans flocked to the City of Brotherly Love for the races, transforming the Relays into a Jamaican Jamfest, replete with beef patties on sale at concession stands and Air Jamaica signs lining the infield. The marquee event, which was nationally televised, was billed as the United States versus the world, featuring American Olympians Allyson Felix, Shawn Crawford and Lauryn Williams.

The American professionals ran Jamaica off the track in both the men's and women's races, it was the high school 4x400 meter relay that elicited the crowd's attention. "When the Jamaicans are in the stands, they are whooping and getting crazy waiting for someone to get caught from behind," said Felix, the 2004 Athens Olympic 200 meter silver medalist. "It gets so loud you don't know where you are on the 400. Most of all, you don't want to hear the whoop."

Cheered on by thousands of countrymen waving green-black-and-yellow flags and blowing horns in the Franklin Field crowd of 49,831, Jamaica also won the women's sprint medley. In the nine years of "USA vs. the World," the only other time Jamaica is listed as having won two events is 2001, when its 1,600 women's team crossed the finish line second to a Marion Jones-led U.S. team that was later stripped of its first-place finish.

Jamaica 's Calabar , St. Jago and Manchester High also did well and claimed championship of American titles at the Relays.

Congrats, wonderful job to all teams that participated

Rent a Rasta or Rent a Dread

I wrote about this before but someone emailed me and asked me to write another piece. So since Summer is coming up, I decided to do this. I don' t know how I feel about rich, women (and previously it stated white women, but other women do it as well) coming to the island and renting the rasta men (an other men for sex).

In a 3rd world, tourism is generally what sustains the country. Sex Tourism is nothing news It has been going on in the Caribbean and many other countries for years. I find that people who exploit other people due to their situation is wrong. The dread is gonna take their money. However, the RASTA, the true RASTA won't have anything to do with them. It does wreck havoc on the Jamaican Culture.

Wayne Cummings, president of the Negril Chamber of Commerce and first vice president of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA), told the Sunday Herald that sex tourism is not condoned by the organizations that he represents. He pointed out that although many visitors to exotic locations such as Jamaica often arrive with hope of finding an “escort”, the country has made efforts to move away from this image. “It still happens, but we categorise it as tourist harassment. We invite tourists here for sun, sea, sand and Jamaican hospitality, which does not necessarily include sexual favors,” said Cummings

Fire Kills 3 Childen- Found Hugging Each Other

Tyrese Johnson 5, Moesha Davis 3, and Dysha Davis (almost one) were not able to escape the flames. Their charred remains were found, bringing tears to the eyes of many people gathered at 38 Crescent Road in Kingston.

Apparently the mother left the children alone and went to the store. The neighbors stated she generally let the kids for hours and hours alone.

Her Uncle said, "
I was in my house sleeping when the smoke wake me up," said Rudolph Bartlett, uncle of the deceased children. "When me go to the window and look, is fire that in their house. Me run around to the house and look at the door and is pure fire, burning hot fire me see. Me start mek up noise and some man come out but we couldn't do anything."

Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller, the member of parliament for South West St Andrew, where Crescent Road is located, appealed to parents to be more careful and not to leave their little ones without adult supervision.

It is sad, and my heart grieves for the children. I think we feel that nothing can happen in just a short time. As you can see sometimes it takes no time for a tragedy to happen. Parents need to be watchful of their children. Now here is a mother that had to flee the district (because if the police didn't get her, the people in the district would probably have killed her), lost her kids, and of course children that lives were lost.

Students find Creative Ways To Smuggle Drugs

School 08 Children behind their new computers

Well, I gotta give it to them, Students have found some really creative ways to smuggle drugs into the classrooms. The Star has reported that Students have brought illicit substances onto the school grounds in ties, inhalers, pens, even asthma pumps.

"The police say that several students in Schools in Portmore, St. Catherine, have been arrested and charged for possession and smoking of marijuana since January. Most of these arrests were made on school compounds or nearby."

"The police will have our support...We cannot allow one student with weed to infect the other students, we would want the police to have a zero tolerance...," he said."

Children Killing with No Remorse

Jamaican School Children

In full daylight Monday a group of boys ,along with other men in plain clothes, chased the teenager along Constant Spring Road before catching up with him at the Transportation center. The men then repeatedly stabbed the teenager who, up to press time, was only identified as 'Raymond'.
He was taken to hospital where he died while undergoing treatment. This was 5pm.

My question is where was the special constabulary force that was hired to protect the people at the center? Plenty people were around, you mean nobody helped the little boy? It is time to stop blaming the old government for the crime wave and start implementing a more drastic procedure. I lived in Jamaica when Martial Law was ordered and I hope it doesn't come back to that.

I hate to see Jamaica become this country lawlessness is the mainstay. It has got to come under control and quickly. I honestly feel that justice system needs to step up and make it undesirable to commit a crime. As a 3rd world country I understand the limitations, but I also know that if the government can spend money to send athletes to all these events oversees, why can't money be allotted to invest more in the youth of the country.

This is a debate going about Agriculture...what about the debate to stop the killing

Anyway just Irie's opinions

Cost of Living Hits Jamaica Hard

Chickens pecking

I know the chickens are glad to hear that. I don't think they are too keen on being eaten . Seriously though Jamaica is going through some hard times right now. According to RJRNEWS," Corporate Affairs Manager at Caribbean Broilers, Dr. Keith Amiel, said the company currently has more stocks of chicken in storage than it did during the corresponding period last year."

Devastation in Saint Ann

Early last Thursday heavy rains that started the previous day forced a path of destruction along Milford Road, causing massive road damage and heavy soil erosion, resulting in tons of mud being deposited downtown Ocho Rios.

Businesses along a stretch of the road as well as the primary and high schools were forced to close following the flood damage, and up to yesterday several business places remained closed.

30 year Celebration of A Country United

On the night of April 22, 1978, at the National Stadium in Kingston, 32,000 people gathered to witness the One Love Peace Concert, an event that was of extraordinary significance to Robert Nesta Marley, a concert, which has been voted the World's sixth 'Rock Concert' of all time.

I was at this concert where Bob Marley United the PNP and the JLP in a show of love and Unity. I came back in this post to add that this video does not do show the love that was at that concert that day. Jamaica went through this transition. Bob came back to the Jamaica to bring and spread that love.

Jamaica doing testing for Autism

Growing up in Jamaica you never heard about the term , "Autism." When children acted up or could not speak the parents would just keep their kids home and not send them to school. Little was known about children who exhibited signs of "mental retardation."

Now, not only is their greater knowledge but several centers to deal with this neurological disorder is available. One such center is the PROMISE LEARNING AND TRAINING CENTER. ( center for children with learning disabilities).

The Education Minister Andrew Holness, said the ministry was currently trying to find the founding for additional programs. He stated they would defiantly partner with organizations who provided assistance and quality care for these children.

The Autism Foundation has established an autism hotline manned by volunteer Dr Charles Thesigar. Parents with autistic children can access free counselling by calling 293-3610.

Email Maia Chung-Smith at mcautismfoundation@mail.com; or call the Promise Learning and Training Centre at 906-8283.

Eat More Cassava!

That is the feeling of Agriculture Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton. He continues to stress the need for the country to change its consumption patterns in the face of rising and the high food import bill.

I mean how can you tell a country whose staple is "rice an peas" that they are to eat cassava as a replacement? Dr. Tufton said this would see planting and consuming done in within those institutions as they have an immediate demand for starches.

Agriculture Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton.Dr. Tufton said the government will also be pushing for the production and consumption of other locally grown starches such as yams and sweet potato.

Crowd Not Happy with the Johnson Fight

There were many boos last Saturday when Glen Johnson took on Chad Dawson. The 39 year old Johnson lost what many think is his last grasp of getting a World Championship. The decison by the fight judges was indeed controversial.

Johnson's record fell to 47 and 12 with 2 draws. He did rock him with some hard right to the body, especially in the last round.

Darryl Vaz is Out

http://www.radiojamaica.com/images/stories/dabdoub_vaz.jpg

Daryl Vaz (JLP representative for West Portland) was disqualified yesterday as a member of Parliament. It was stated that the Chief Justice stated his dual citzenship played a part in that decision.
Following yesterday's ruling by Chief Justice Zaila McCalla, attorney Gayle Nelson successfully applied for a stay of execution of the by-election ruling, pending an appeal by his client, Abe Dabdoub. It is said Dabdoub was instrumental in protesting the appointment of Daryl Vaz.

A 42-day stay of execution was granted to both parties.
An upbeat and confident Vaz told reporters yesterday after court that he would renounce his citizenship in order to contest the by-election whenever it is held.

Vaz has dual citizenship in the United States and Jamaica. This question has come up many times in Jamaican elections, wheter a person with dual citizenship can hold office. The
Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has taken a stoic stance on the ruling made by Chief Justice Zaila McCalla in the dual citizenship case brought by the People's National Party's Abe Dabdoub against Member of Parliament for West Portland Daryl Vaz.

Rest In Peace- Cedella Marley

Cedella Marley Booker, 81, the mother of late reggae musician Bob Marley, has passed away at her South Florida home on Tuesday. She was known to all as, "Mother Booker." Mother Booker wrote two books about her son and released two albums "Awake Zion" and "Smilin' Island of Song."

Booker was surrounded by loved ones inside her South Miami-Dade home and was ''very happy and very peaceful,'' said daughter-in-law Sharien Booker. ``Her vision was always to bring people together. She was a very loving person, and we know she's happy.''

'Mrs. Booker was the matriarch of a movement so powerful that the mystical qualities of the Marley musical legacy remain strong and potent,'' said Jamaican Information Minister Olivia Grange.

''She was a star in her own right,'' Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding said in a statement. ``Her life was one of hardship, struggle and eventual fulfillment, and through it all, she exuded hope, strength and confidence.''

Born in Jamaica in 1926, Booker was 18 when she married Norval Marley, a 50-year-old British quartermaster. After he died in 1955, she married Edward Booker, moved to Delaware, then relocated to Miami, where she lived for the past 20 years. She was very well loved by the Miami Community.

Questions on how Meat is being Slaughtered

Dr. White is calling for an investigation from the Government to implement a national food and nutrition policy to address the manner in which meat is being prepared at the local slaughterhouses.
She states, " With this in place, the issues of sanitation and hygiene would be taken care of sanitation, in terms of environment and surroundings, hygiene, in terms of the individuals who prepare food." She further states that old practices of slaughtering animals in backyard or under trees has to stop.

I agree with the premise that adequate packaging, labeling and processing standards should go up.

Body Dug Up From Dirt Floor of Home

Marsha Martin of Guava Gap, Stony Hill had been missing since March 31st. Sadly, yesterday her remains were found in the dirt floor of the house that she shared with her common law husband, Donald Coleman.

Coleman confessed to killing her (on March 31st) but did not state where the body was. His confession angered residents who tied him to a street signpost and beat him unconscious before going on an intense search for the missing woman.

news

I found this joke at Jamaican Jokes. Check it out.

A young Jamaican University graduate applied for an engineering position at a Kingston based firm. A Trini Engineer also applied for the job, and both applicants, since they had the same qualifications on paper, were asked by the Department Manager to take a test.

Upon completion of the test, the manager went to the Jamaican and said, "Thank you for your interest, but we've decided to give the man from Trinidad the job."

The Jamaican asked, "Suh why yu do dat? Bote a wi get nine questions rite. And dis is Jamaica, and me is Jamaican, so a me shoulda get de wuk!"

The manager said, "We have made our decision, based not on the correct answers, but rather on the question that you both missed."

The Jamaican asked, "An how in the name of Jesus yu decide sey one wrong answer betta dan de adda ?"

The manager replied, "Simple. The Trini put down "'I don't know" for question
5, and you put "Me nuh know either".

Jamaican Flowers

Jamaica has some beautiful flowers. I remember coming home from school and going through the open field to my house and just watching all the colors that surrounded me. Of course back then, when you are a child, you don't really appreciate all the things that God has created.

When I listen to my friend tell me about "country" and he shows me pictures of the various trees and plants...it makes me homesick for a country I didn't get to spend too much time in.

So I decided to dedicate this page to some of Jamaican Flowers. See how much you recognize...leave comments if you like.
